Mermaid myths are an international phenomenon most recently represented in British/Nigerian author Helen Oyeyemi’s novel ‘The Opposite House’. The Yoruba pantheon itself has traveled through parts of Europe, and even as far as Cuba where it is in some places practiced as a religion. Inspired by this worldwide appeal, we decided to take a closer look at the myth in two formats- The documentary format (Lady in the Water) and the narrative film format (Nkiru).
The Lady In the Water & Nkiru projects fulfill three of 37thSTATE’s missions, which are to educate, entertain and inspire its audiences in a unique, fresh and accessible way.Nkiru premiered off-line earlier this year with a limited release and was featured alongside its director on MTV’S Touching Base short documentary series.
Watch the Nkiru trailer here and stay tuned next week on Bella Naija and 37thstate Online to catch the documentary and short-film in full as well as aspecial giveaway for our readers.
