Pre-Poo Revisited
It is great to pre-poo but even better if you know what you are doing and why. When Jeni realised she needed to treat her scalp condition for example, she got to mixing. This might help if you are thinking about oils to use for your own treatment.
Reading through Just Grow Already, I noticed that Jeni mostly pre-poos with oil on her scalp and another type of oil on the length of her hair. I needed to understand why before I switched to this method instead of what I used to do (pre-poo with conditioner only on the rare occasion that I pre-poo'd). Thankfully, I came across The Natural Haven's blog post on this subject and now I think I understand how oil pre-poos might be great for people like me with porosity issues. I have now adopted this method for the most part except for days when I am using Aubrey Organics products (GPB, AOHSR) because so far, it looks like I only get leverage with Aubrey Organics conditioners when I pre-poo on dry hair with them and wash/condition with Elucence Moisture Balancing Conditioner.
When I pre-poo with oil, I now do so overnight but after reading this review, and TNH's thoughts:
...the study has highlighted that it may be possible to damage hair by keeping it wet for prolonged times. I do actually think that this is very likely and it is why I do not support conditioning hair for prolonged times - The Natural Haven
When I pre-poo on dry hair with a protein conditioner (GPB for instance), I do so for about 20 minutes with heat or up to a maximum of 2 hours without heat.
Using heat is beneficial not for increasing swelling of hair or 'opening' cuticles but rather for allowing more conditioner to stick on the surface of hair (aDsorb) - see this post - The Natural Haven
That said, when I pre-poo on dry hair with a homemade protein concoction with larger molecules (I don't mean eggs), I tend to do so overnight.
Are there any changes you are making to your overnight conditioning process? Does your hair respond better when you pre-poo with oil? Are you a fan of the protein pre-poo on dry hair as your deep conditioner followed by moisturising conditioner after your wash? How are you finding the perfect protein-moisture balance for your hair?
